Peace-Friendly Cities

Municipalities committed to a culture of peace.

About

The Cities for Peace Program is a strategic CIEPI initiative that mobilizes and recognizes municipalities committed to institutionalizing a Culture of Peace.

The program aims to transform urban territories into safer, more resilient, inclusive, and harmonious environments — through integrated public policies and collaborative governance. It operates as a network of municipalities that share best practices and learn together how to build positive peace from the ground up.

Program Purpose:

These peace-friendly cities strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for all citizens, regardless of origin, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. By joining the Cities for Peace network, municipalities commit to working together toward a more peaceful and sustainable world.

Objectives

  • Builds partnerships between government, civil society, the private sector, and international organizations for integrated planning.
  • Addresses the root causes of conflict and violence by developing proactive — not merely reactive — policies.
  • Introduces and strengthens education for peace and non-violence as a foundational pillar in municipal school curricula.
  • Develops continuous, long-term actions integrated into Municipal Development Plans to ensure lasting impact.
